Merge Signs GBV's Robert Pollard
Former Guided By Voices frontman Robert Pollard has signed a new deal with Merge Records, which will on Jan. 26 issue a double-disc album, "From a Compound Eye." Pollard will continue to release projects on his own Fading Captain imprint but that future solo releases under his name will go through Merge.
Pollard previously said that "From a Compound Eye" has "all four P's: pop, punk, prog and psychedelic." The 26-track project was recorded at frequent GBV outpost Waterloo Sound in Kent, Ohio.
Although the itinerary is not yet finalized, Pollard will mount his first post-GBV tour around the release of "From a Compound Eye" with a band of notable musicians to be determined. Sources also say the artist has Fading Captain projects with three different groups in the works for 2006.
Beforehand, there are several upcoming Pollard/GBV releases in the works. As previously reported, Oct. 31 will bring the release of "Suitcase 2," a four-disc, 100-track collection of Pollard rarities, each credited to a different band name (highlights: Apes In The Window, Milko Waif, Billy Ray Human, Dale Frescamo, Gene Autrey's Psychic). The accompanying booklet extends the theme, with Pollard's own collages and artwork for fictitious singles from the collection.
A DVD of GBV's final show on New Year's Eve 2004 in Chicago, "The Electrifying Conclusion," is due Nov. 15 via Plexifilm. That week, Pollard will be on hand for four book signings in celebration of "Guided By Voices: A Brief History -- Twenty-one Years of Hunting Accidents in the Forests of Rock and Roll," penned by former GBV bassist James Greer and due Nov. 7 via Grove/Atlantic.
The pair will visit Joseph-Beth Booksellers in Cincinnati (Nov. 13), Books & Co. the next day in Pollard's Dayton, Ohio, hometown, Chicago's Depaul University Bookstore (Nov. 15) and Barnes & Noble Chelsea in New York (Nov. 17).
